A Life with Fingerprints All Over It

I’ve been living a Talbot’s version of a life. It’s been bland and uninspired. It’s been as devoid of personality and flair as a rumpled pair of chinos and a pastel cable-knit.

When I stepped outside yesterday to pick up my lunch, I stood outside for a minute, just soaking up the setting to my day, seeing the courtyard in a new light.

When I first moved to Orlando, I was infatuated with the city. I got crazy tourist eyes every time I went somewhere.  I was itching to settle in to this fantastic new place where I could assemble my life any which way I wanted.

Somewhere along the line, I busted my give-a-damn. I just wanted to get through the days – much less put any effort into living them.

My life stopped being distinctly mine. It turned into this vague amalgamation of oatmeal and Netflix and planners and rent checks and even I didn’t find it interesting. Any of you who have been reading this blog for any amount of time {my condolences} would be lying if you said you found anything I wrote in 2011 remotely entertaining.

There hasn’t been heart. There haven’t been fingerprints.

I want my life to add up to something.

I want it to be so smudged with my grubby fingerprints that every minute of it is unmistakably mine.

I want it to be big.

I want it to be a life that couldn’t happen to anyone else.

The Paperless Office Pledge

I’ve been noticing a pattern in my dining habits lately, and it isn’t pretty.

Breakfast at home: served on a reusable plate.

001-2

Lunch at home: also served on a reusable plate.

ranchpotatowedges

Dinner? You guessed it – reusable plate.

Lunch at the office, though?

013-2

Which of these does not belong?

A while back, when I realized I was throwing away 3-4 paper coffee cups every day, I brought in a ceramic mug to drink from instead. Opting for a reusable mug was a great step in the right direction, but it never dawned on me that packing lunches in Tupperware, only to serve them on tossable paper plates with plastic silverware, was doing just as much damage to the environment as my coffee cup disposal!

Since I’m a firm believer in making little changes that add up over time, it was a no-brainer decision to find a spare set of reusable plates {and utensils!} in my kitchen to bring along to the office.

If you still use disposable wares to eat lunches from at your office, go ahead and grab an extra mug, plate, dish and set of silverware from your pantry on your way in to work this morning. Take the Paperless Office Pledge with me, and commit to a small, waste-reducing change. In just one year alone, 64 billion cups and plates ended up in landfills.  It may not be a blatant world-saver, but five fewer plates from each of us every day is a step in the right direction!

Do you already use recyclable plates when you bring lunch/coffee to the office, or do you grab paper products out of convenience like I’ve been doing?

What Nobody Tells you About Long Distance Relationships

Happy Valentine’s Day! Single, in a relationship, “it’s complicated”…whatever your status reads these days, dig up some chocolate, some flowers, and whatever makes you feel like the badass chick you are, and indulge in it Smile

I entertained a few different ideas for a big V-Day post, including a sickly sweet dessert recipe and a shpeal about loving yourself as much as you love your loved ones, but what I really wanted to share was something a little less sugar-coated-hearts-and-glitter.

As most of y’all know, The Coach and I are currently navigating a long-distance relationship, which has accounted for basically half of the time we’ve been dating. {That would be a year and a half, for my readers who are as nosy as I am.} We’re blessed in the sense that our two hour separation isn’t that far – especially compared to couples who live across the country – but even the Orlando/Jacksonville split has still been challenging nonetheless. There’s a lot of work that we’ve put into making things as smooth as possible until we’re in a position to be in the same place at the same time.

IMG_7268_thumb

In regards to what I get asked the most frequently – yes, all the challenges are worth it. A thousand times over. Let’s be honest here – long distance SUCKS at times – but toughing out the long stretches to get to the visits are 100 percent worth it. If it wasn’t worth it, there’s no way we’d be doing this.

When we first jumped into this arrangement, I turned to friends in the same situation for advice. As with any challenging personal situation, finding people who have made it out alive made it seem way less scary. My best female friend gave me advice from the year she spent travelling between her home in Florida to her {now husband}’s home in Alabama. My best male friend just ended things with his girlfriend, but for a while, we bonded over our identical situation and helped each other see the good in the tough times. Having people who can relate is absolutely key.

Despite how helpful others’ advice was, just like any relationship, your experience is yours and yours alone. What I’m saying now could be 100 percent different from what you come to experience. Some of the things I was told to brace myself for – like worrying about the possibility of cheating – have been non-issues for us. On the other end of the spectrum, some of the stuff that’s become a big deal for me wasn’t even mentioned by the friends I turned to for advice. You’re in this with your partner. He {or she} is going to be the person you have to lean on and make things work with.

You can go insane comparing your relationship to local relationships. This seems like such a no-brainer, right? Comparing relationships is a recipe for jealousy and disaster any time, but even more so when distance is a factor. No matter how much you try to normalize things for the two of you, the bottom line is that you’re playing with a different deck of cards than most other couples are. It’s easy to feel like your relationship is inferior when your girlfriends are prattling on about how brilliant theirs is {total singleton moment!}

Case in point: Valentine’s Day. I was already bummed about spending the day alone when my college roommate excitedly telling me about the night she had planned with her fiancé. All of the sudden, I started feeling even more down about the situation, and picked a really ridiculous fight with the coach over our plans. Turns out, the night out we had this weekend in Jacksonville {helloooo, Maggianos!} was our own awesome way of celebrating the holiday.

IMAG0078

On that note, you’re going to fight, and it’s going to suck. The coach and I rarely fought when we were seeing each other frequently {honest!} It was one of the reasons I fell for him – we could talk bluntly about anything and not let it become a big deal. As I remember it, our first actual fight was six months after we start dating. When we ended up farther apart several months later, bickering became more frequent. Although that comes with the territory of being with someone for any extended amount of time, it’s also exaggerated by the distance. It’s harder to diffuse a budding fight when you’re not having the conversation in person. There’s no body language to read, no hand-on-his-arm tactic to cool things down, no immediate re-connection when you make up. Tension can build between the two of you more quickly without consistent bonding experiences to reduce the stress levels, and fights are going to happen.

No matter how busy you are, you’re going to get lonely. One of the best pieces of advice I was given was to stay busy. Between working full time, blogging, freelancing, spending significant amounts of time in the yoga studio/gym, taking care of my puppy, and staying involved with different circles of friends, I feel like I have a lot to occupy myself…but there are also a lot of times that it isn’t enough. Boredom turns into wallowing, which far-too-easily turns into feeling sorry for myself. Seriously, no good comes out of it. Fill your plate up, add a little more as a side dish, and have some back-up plans for the spaces in between.

You’re going to have times when you’d kick a baby for some romance. Hormonal days when nothing would be more amazing than coming home to a neck massage and a bar of chocolate are a lot tougher when you’re going through them alone. You also start to miss the hell out of everyday things that made your relationship stronger, like relying on him for help with the dishes. {Also considered a form of romance in some relationships Winking smile}

Whatever your greatest insecurities are, they’ll be brought out. Although this experience has brought out a lot of my good qualities – such as independence – it also has exaggerated some of my biggest flaws. There’s a lot of anxiety that can come with a long distance relationship, which can turn a natural worrier into a huge ball of stress. Over-analyzers can find 100 more things to laser-focus on. Whatever issues are the biggest in your relationship and/or personal life when you are together are going to magnify when you separate.

At the end of the day, no matter what crazy situations arise, you’re not in it alone. Your partner has got your back through all of it {and by all of it, I’m definitely including crazy teary-eyed phone conversations over Red Hot Chili Peppers lyrics}. Every day y’all make it is another day closer to your next visit, and once you get there, don’t take a single second for granted. It’s tougher than you’d ever imagined, but it’s going to be worth it.

Have you ever spent extended time away from your partner? What did you learn from the experience?

New York City: The Food

When I told Michael I was planning to bring some Clif Bars up to NYC with me for breakfasts {one of my go-to tricks for cheap travel}, he told me I was nuts, except I believe he phrased it more along the lines of “HAVE YOU COMPLETELY LOST YOUR EFFING MIND, CRAZY WOMAN?”

Even though it still seemed like a valid idea, I followed his advice and left all my meals to the NYC chefs/food cart vendors. Best idea of the trip? I think so.

I wanted to sample a bit of everything – and I began my culinary greed before I had even left the airport.

airport starbucks

The MCO Starbucks lured me in with samples of the new Blonde Roast coffee. It was smooth, but not bold enough for me to order it on a regular basis.  I walked away with a hazelnut Americano – surprise surprise – and settled down to wait for my flight.

airport drink

I have a sneaking suspicion you aren’t here to read about airport food, so let’s get to the good stuff!

UVA Wine Bar and Italian Ristorante

The absolute highlight of the trip was Friday night’s dinner at UVA. Our timing was perfect – rolling in around 8 pm got us the absolute last table available {and they had quite a few tables packed into the tiny space!}

Their beet gnocchi was hardcore delicious and worth every penny {but not worth embarrassing the junk out of my tablemate to snap a photograph of. Trust me on this one – gorgeous, melt-in-your-mouth fabulous, order it if you have the chance}.

NY Style Bagels

I don’t think a morning meal is complete in NYC without a bagel. I had at least 5 during my stay – but who’s counting?

nyc breakfast sandwich

This carb queen could happily subsist on the doughy, chewy disks every single day of my life and be perfectly happy. As awesome as the bagels at the Queens coffee shop were, I had to order one at a street cart as well:

Bagel overload simply does not exist.

Sicaffe New York

When a snow flurry interrupted my Friday afternoon shopping extravaganza, I ducked into Lexington Avenue’s Sicaffe for a caffeinated pick-me-up:

sicaffe new york

If 17 degree weather doesn’t call for an iced beverage, I don’t know what does Winking smile

sicaffe americano

Nice and strong – just the way I like it!

Later in the day, another break was taken to pick something – anything – that wasn’t bread from a fruit cart. See? I DID make an effort to eat somewhat healthfully {but not to do my nails, obviously – whoops!}

street apple

Barney Greengrass

Per the local yokel’s suggestion, the legendary Barney Greengrass was on the agenda for Saturday morning brunch, starting with a shared plate of latkes.

barney greengrass latkes

These latkes weren’t healthy by any stretch of the imagination – but neither were most of my food choices during the trip. I was there to enjoy – and enjoy I did! I feel so blessed that I can allow myself to relax, unwind and not obsess about calories because situations like this definitely called for guilt-free indulging!

I was savoring my half of the latke order when the Barney’s waiter literally swept into our corner, pulled my plate away from my hand and plunked down my main dish. The only thing that saved him from getting a fork to the fist was how scrumptious my mushroom omlette looked.

Levain Bakery Monster Cookies

Since we were in the neighborhood, a stop for palm-sized cookies was a total necessity after Barney Greengrass. The tiny basement bakery only fits about 4 people at a time, so we waited in line in the chilly air for our turn at the monster cookies.

At four bucks a pop, I knew the cookies had to be pretty phenomenal. The chocolate walnut version definitely didn’t disappoint!

New York Style Pizza

Who are we kidding – do you really think a New York trip would be complete without a slice of pizza?

ny pizza

Why no, that isn’t a blurry picture – you’re simply delirious from the thought of an eggplant, spinach and ricotta pizza Winking smile

Whew – I’m starving just looking through all of these pictures!

What was the best meal you’ve eaten on a vacation? My vote goes to the UVA gnocchi, or the veggie burger and face-sized plate of fries from the Irish pub we stopped at to watch the Giants game with the local fans. Too, too good!

New York: The Sights

I’m home safely – and warmly – from gorgeous New York!

After staring at the Orlando skyline for the last year, it was a gorgeous switch-up to spend five days exploring a whole new city {and one renowned for its sights at that!}

Traveling alone is amazing. Okay – I wasn’t alone for the whole time, but wandering around a city for a bit without anyone to set your itinerary, write your schedule or lay out turn-by-turn directions is seriously something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. Adventuring around New York City on Thursday and Friday while Michael wrapped up his work week was a BLAST!

{Bonus: by walking around alone, I didn’t  embarrass the native by taking a billion and five pictures on every block}

I took the Subway from Queens into Manhattan and walked until my feet honestly couldn’t walk any more. Some of my favorite sights from along the way:

012

The Met

010

Met Fountains

009

007

Upper East Side apartments

004

Park Avenue {still decorated for Christmas!}

021

Once I’d had my fill of wandering and shopping outside, I headed indoors to tour the met.

022

I’ve always been obsessed with Egyptian culture. The 15+ Egypt galleries kept me occupied for hours!

023  025

The same went for the Impressionists wing – my inner humanities geek was swooning!

024

026

Once I’d warmed up, it was back to the streets!

013

The Italian embassy reminded me so much of my trip to Washington DC last summer – another mind-blowingly awesome vacation, if I do say so myself!

032

Stellar sights, even more stellar eats. Tomorrow we’ll relive the deliciousness!

Have you ever been to New York? What are your favorite attractions in your favorite city?

Scary Productive

I told you guys that I had big plans to be productive and get organized today, but I had no idea HOW organized things could get over here in the For the Health of It household.

This may have been my most productive Monday ever. Sorry, boss.

 038039

I’m really organized, but I also HATE housework, and I couldn’t remember the last time my whole place was cleaned out top to bottom. Today was the day! In a few short hours, I torched through everything that usually gets neglected. The place hasn’t been this spotless since I moved in!

Before getting my domestic on, I met up with my friend Kaitlyn for a gym sesh. Her New Years Resolution is to lose a few pounds that she gained over the last several months, so I was happy to have a partner in crime crunches. Having the workout buddy made me stay in the gym longer than I usually would have.

Longer workout = bigger appetite!

012

Infusion’s veggie panini was still lingering in my brain, so I created my own hot pressed sandwich for lunch. My version had tomatoes, spinach and onion, plus a spread of Tofutti cream cheese + basil pesto. For some protein, I tossed together some chickpeas and other goodies into a cold deli salad – recipe coming your way tomorrow.

Seitan and dumplings is on the stove – ready to kick my feet up and enjoy the rest of the night!

Monday Night Blessings {Giveaway}

Remember several weeks ago when I shared about the Target + Restaurant.com gift card promotion on Eversave?

The cards finally turned up in my mailbox last night. I decided to pull a little impromptu shopping spree and stock up on some of the basics.

004

005

I also took the gift card shop-portunity to pick out a few fun, new-to-me products as well.

006

It should be interesting to see how the Silk mint chocolate milk stacks up to the Westsoy version!

Once my shopping spree hit the gift card total, I headed to the register to check out. As he rang me up, the cashier made my night by telling me that two of my gift cards were actually $50 cards instead of $25. Instead of owing just a few dollars, I headed home with leftover Target credit!

It was totally the blessing a long Monday needed Smile

Now it’s your turn to get in on some awesome savings! The restaurant.com gift cards are valid all over the country and can be redeemed for some awesome vouchers in your area. You can score deals like $25 off a $50 tab or $50 off two entrees – the options are different for every city!

I’ve got 3 different $50 cards for y’all – that could hook you up with vouchers for two or three different restaurants.

Three Days in Three Minutes

No way is it Monday already.

There needs to be a little more of this:

005

A lot more of this:

011

Absolutely more fried sugar-dough:

006

I’d also be cool with another messy veggie burger a ‘la Circus McGurkus.

008

In all of the day-to-day seriousness of being an adult, sometimes you just need to stop, relax and be a kid. It’s good for the soul

013

But today, it’s back to job-land for me!

014

When was the last time you just took a day {or even a few hours} to just play around and be a kid?

Impulse

Y’all know I can be a bit impulsive (and I’m not exactly talking about throwing some fresh basil on my breakfast bagel on a whim):

051

Delicious as the basil was…

055

…I’m talking about a slightly more impulsive impulse:

010

Gah – that’s permanent, isn’t it?

Actually, getting this tattoo wasn’t a completely spur-of-the-moment decision. I’ve wanted one for a while but last night I finally got up the nerve to go in to a parlor and have it done!

Pazienza – it’s Italian for “have patience.” It’s a reminder that I desperately need, as I often let impatience get the best of me. It’s also precious advice from my grandfather, hence the choice of the Italian text. Thanks to his heritage, I’m crazy about the country, the language, the food…the list goes on and on.

I certainly need more patience. Patience with others, patience with myself, patience that life will work out, patience that I can attain whatever I’m working towards, you name it – I need it.

I love it. I just hope I’ll feel the same in 20 years!

Question of the morning:

Ink – do you have any? If someone told you that you had to get a tattoo right now, what/where would it be?

Four Extra Hours

The relaxation gods were smiling on me today.

As usual, I began to gear up for a hectic Monday. Ultra-filling oatmeal breakfast? Check.

002

Beastliest salad of my life, packed and tossed into my bag for work? Check.

003

Organic romaine, carrots, tomato, celery, onion, avocado, sprouts, sautéed tempeh and pumpkin seeds – say that five times fast!

Three hours into my workday, I busted out the salad and started to dig in, when I heard a coworker call my name – all of the other employees were headed for the door, and I was so mesmerized by the mondo salad hungry that I hadn’t noticed we were evacuating.

Apparently, a small electrical fire had started downstairs, and after we were cleared to come back in the building, we learned that my company’s servers were completely shot. With an estimated 24 hour repair estimate, we were all sent home by 1:30 pm!

Four glorious, sunny afternoon hours, and authorized leave from work? Who in their right minds would have stayed inside?

006

I parked my pasty bum directly in the sunny half of my apartment’s pool and soaked up some warmth while finishing Eat, Pray, Love. I didn’t find the book as inspiring as others, but I sure was jealous of her trip to Italy and her 6 week yoga retreat!

Although the novel made me want to hit up an impromptu yoga class, I decided to spend the money to do something about my scraggly split ends, which accidentally led to a touch of antiquing…

007

But I ultimately came home with nothing and happily slipped into my comfy pants to spend the rest of my time waiting for Monday Night Football.

008

It may take a forklift to haul me to the gym tonight. I’ve got twenty minutes to magically make some motivation appear!

What would you have done with four surprise hours off of work?
